The International Internship Program
at the Virtual Reality Laboratory
of the University of Michigan
The Virtual Reality Laboratory (VRL) at the University of Michigan in Ann
Arbor, Michigan, USA, offers international students and scientists the
opportunity to participate in research and development at the VRL and to
gain practical experience in the application of immersive and non-immersive virtual reality
to engineering and industrial problems as well as in other areas.
Information about the laboratory's current activities can be found on the
World Wide Web: http://www-VRL.umich.edu/
Participants in the international internship program are expected to work
at the VRL for a period of four to eight months. Applications are accepted
at any time. Qualifying applicants should have good knowledge and practical
experience in at least some of the following areas:
- Principles of computer graphics and virtual reality
- Programming (C++, Java, Open GL, Inventor, Performer, others ..)
- Modeling and Scripting in VRML
- Geometric modeling background, computer-aided design (CAD), computational geometry, parametric curves and surfaces
- Human animation, motion capture
As a general rule, the internship program does not provide financial
compensation. Participants will be responsible for their financial support.
To obtain the appropriate visa (J-1 visa), participants have to declare in a DS-2019 [IAP-66] Request Form (provided by the VRL) the sources and amount of financial
support obtained from the participant's government/organization or
available from personal funds. For a six months period of stay in the USA,
a minimum amount of $9,000 must be declared if the participant is single ($1,500 per month). All international visitors to the University of Michigan must have health
insurance coverage. Health insurance can be obtained from the UofM International Center.
In special situations, the VRL may provide financial assistance if the
budget situation at the VRL allows for such support. The VRL will assist in
finding affordable housing in Ann Arbor for participants in the program.
To apply for participation in the international internship program, send a
resume (including a description of computer skills and experience), your transcript, and two letters of recommendations to
